Full Professor - Inorganic Chemistry Department - Chemistry Institute - Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Scientific interest: 1) Inorganic Chemistry - halogen chemistry; 2) Physical Chemistry – kinetics, reaction mechanisms, homogeneous catalysis, oscillating reactions, clock reactions, and complex systems; 3) Bioinorganic chemistry – kinetics and mechanisms of model complex for metalloenzymes. Member of the Editorial Board of Química Nova. Translator from English to Portuguese of General Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry textbooks. Member of the IUPAC Nomenclature Committee (2002-2006). JBCS Medal 2011. Discoverer of five clock reactions (world record for a single person): bromite-iodide clock reaction, chlorate-iodine-light clock reaction, ozone-iodine-chlorate clock reaction, chlorate-iodine-nitrous acid, and chlorate-iodide-light.
