Biography
I'm Associate Professor (lecturer and researcher) in the School of Food Technology and Natural Sciences, Massey University, Manawatū, New Zealand. I teach into undergraduate programs in Molecular Cell Biology, Veterinary Science and Animal Science. A central theme of my research program is understanding the relationship between protein structure and function in various important biological contexts. I have research interests in methanogen enzyme structural biology, biochemistry and evolution; a relatively unexplored research area but with very important implications for several big issues in biology, namely climate change, the origins of life and evolution of the first cells, and the evolutionary divergence of archaea and bacteria. I also have research interests in protein structure and function within a biomedical context investigating the molecular mechanisms behind genetic diseases including developmental neurological and skeletal disorders. Structural biology and biochemistry are particular research specialities of my lab.
