Biography
Miroslav Nikolic graduated with honors in Agriculture (Viticulture major) and earned his MSc degree in Plant Physiology from the University of Belgrade. As a DAAD fellow in the University of Hohenheim’s Institute of Plant Nutrition, he completed the experimental part of a sandwich-model Ph.D. thesis and received his Ph.D. degree in Agricultural Sciences from the University of Belgrade. He completed two post-docs in Plant Nutritional Physiology, the first with Volker Römheld at the University of Hohenheim, working on iron dynamics in the leaf apoplast, and then with Roberto Pinton and Zeno Varanini at the University of Udine, working on root-to-shoot nitrate translocation and anion uptake by the leaf cells. Since 2003 he has been with the University of Belgrade’s Institute for Multidisciplinary Research establishing his research group of Plant Nutrition in 2011.
Current research of his team centers on plant response mechanisms to mineral stresses, from nutrient deficiency to the excess of different minerals, with a special focus on the mechanisms through which silicon modulates the acquisition, transport, and utilization of nutrients in crops. Most recent research focuses on how the nutrient status within plants influences the mobilization of silicon in the rhizosphere. Miroslav's team was the first one to demonstrate that silicon promotes root acquisition and uptake of nutrients under conditions of their low availability by up-regulating the expression of key genes involved in these processes. Ongoing research is to understand the mode of silicon action in improving both stress resistance and nutrient use efficiency in crops, which may pave the way toward sustainable crop production in a stressful environment.
