Biography
Dr. Ika Dewi Ana is currently a professor at the Department of Dental Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). She is a dentist by training, graduated from UGM, Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 1993. She continued her study in Clinical Epidemiology at Graduate School of Medicine, UGM and got her PhD in Dental Sciences, field of Bioceramics from Kyushu University, Japan, in 2004. Her area of interest is bioceramics, tissue engineering, and regenerative medical therapy.
The important path in her scientific career is her study under the supervision of Professor Kunio Ishikawa (Kyushu University) at that time she was awarded the most outstanding research presentation from Asian BioCeramics Society in 2003. She continued her scientific works as a research fellow of JSPS (Japan Society for The Promotion of Science) in 2005-2007, a postdoctoral research fellow of KNAW (The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences) to run postdoctoral research collaboration by joining Professor John A. Jansen`s research group with Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen Medical Center, The Netherlands in 2007-2009, and a visiting researcher at the Institute for Frontier Life and Medical Sciences, Kyoto University, Japan by joining Professor Yasuhiko Tabata`s group.
There are 3 research works based on carbonate apatite or CHA (CHA Bone Graft, CHA Hemostatic Sponge for Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery, and CHA Hemostatic Sponge for Plastic and General Surgery) which have been registered and marketed in Indonesia by a university holding company and a state-owned pharmaceutical company in Indonesia. While the other 2 are in the process of translation (CHA Adjuvant and CHA Membrane for Dental Craniofacial Surgery). On December 16, 2014, he received the "Most Outstanding Intellectual Property Award" from the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia. Ika also received several international awards. In 2022, Ika was granted the Habibie Prize for Medicine and Biotechnology from the National Agency for Research and Innovation of the Republic of Indonesia (BRIN) and the SDM Science and Technology Foundation. In 2023, she received the WIPO National Award for Inventor based on her work on carbonate apatite registered in a database and widely used in clinics.
For international cooperation schemes, she is involved in the MSCA-RISE (Marie Sklowdowska Curie Action – Research and Innovation Staff Exchange) Horizon 2020 research funded by the European Union which aims to develop innovative multifunctional materials to produce a new generation of medical implants with instructive cell potential and antibacterial. The project's acronym is BioTUNE (https://biotune.upc.edu/en). She is also the Southeast Asia (SEA) lead researcher for the “MicroLung” project, which is funded through the SEA-Europe Joint Science Funding scheme. The "MicroLung" project is a research aimed at preparing a tissue engineering model of the pulmonary blood-air barrier. With a lung-on-a-chip microfluidic system, she and her group are providing an experimental model for studies of the mechanism of SARS-CoV-2 and use CHA-nanoparticle and nanodiamonds to provide a new therapeutics approach for viral diseases.
She has served as an Industrial Committee Member of TERMIS-AP since 2015. She was also involved in the module development and dissemination programs for strengthening the University-Industry Partnership in the Asia-Pacific region, under the management of UNESCO. She had been mandatory assigned by the university to be the commissioner and member of technology valuation board of UGM Start Up Company for Drug and Medical Devices, which in 2014-2018 translated 12 medical products and medical technologies into the market in Indonesia.
She has served as a Council Member of TERMIS-AP (Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Society - Asia Pacific Chapter) since 2019-Now. Also, she leads the National Research Collaboration Center for Biomedical Scaffolds, a national collaborating Center of Excellent between the National Research and Innovation Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (BRIN) and Universitas Gadjah Mada.
