He studied medicine (1985) and internal medicine (1989) at the Universidad Austral de Chile in Valdivia and specialised in gastroenterology (1991) at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

His research interests focus on gallstone disease, biliary lipid secretion, gallbladder cancer, cholesterol metabolism, as well as genomics of complex metabolic diseases.
Apart from being awarded with the Chilean Presidente de la República Fellowship (1991-1993), he also was awarded a Humboldt Research Fellowship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany), conducting research on gallstone disease and biliary lipid secretion (1991-1993) at the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität München, Germany.
As an alumnus, Professor Miquel served as Ambassador Scientist of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Chile (honorary capacity).

He has extensive experience in academic management activities such as:
Member and coordinator of the FONDECYT Medicine-II Study Group, CONICYT (Comisión Nacional de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica, 4 years)
Head of the graduate program in Gastroenterology at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (5 years)
Member of the Academic qualification Advisory Committee and Academic Career Advisory Committee at the Faculty of Medicine of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (4 years)
Member of the Academic Career Advisory Commission, Office of the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (3 years)
Member of the Program Committee for the PhD in Medical Sciences, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (14 years)
Director of Research and Doctoral Programs, School of Medicine, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (2 years)

Professor Miquel is currently a regular member of the Scientific Health Ethics Committee at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
He has extensive experience (30 years) in undergraduate teaching of medical students and other health-related fields (dentistry, nutrition, nursing) in areas ranging from physiology and pathophysiology to clinical practice. He also has extensive experience in postgraduate teaching in medical specialisitation programs (Internal medicine and Gastroenterology), and has supervised numerous master's theses and directed some doctoral dissertations.
