Biography
Juan Francisco Miquel is a physician and gastroenterologist, working at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago, where he is also a Full Professor (profesor titular) at the Faculty of Medicine. He studied medicine (1985) and internal medicine (1989) at the Universidad Austral de Chile in Valdivia and specialised in gastroenterology (1991) at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
His research interests focus on gallstone disease, biliary lipid secretion, gallbladder cancer, cholesterol metabolism, as well as genomics of complex metabolic diseases.
Apart from being awarded with the Chilean Presidente de la República Fellowship (1991-1993), he also was awarded a Humboldt Research Fellowship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany), conducting research on gallstone disease and biliary lipid secretion (1991-1993) at the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität München, Germany.
As an alumnus, Professor Miquel served as Ambassador Scientist of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Chile (honorary capacity).

Professor Miquel is currently a regular member of the Scientific Health Ethics Committee at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
He has extensive experience (30 years) in undergraduate teaching of medical students and other health-related fields (dentistry, nutrition, nursing) in areas ranging from physiology and pathophysiology to clinical practice. He also has extensive experience in postgraduate teaching in medical specialisitation programs (Internal medicine and Gastroenterology), and has supervised numerous master's theses and directed some doctoral dissertations.
