Biography
Luca Ascari, Ph.D. (1975) is an Electrical Engineer with a PhD in Industrial and Information Technologies from Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (Pisa, I). In 2007 he co-founds Henesis, a startup focused on applied AI; in 2014 Henesis joins the CAMLIN group and becomes its centre of competence in Artificial Intelligence. CAMLIN Board member and Director of Biomedical Research, Dr. Ascari leads the healthcare unit, a team of young and brilliant researchers which conceive and develop AI-powered innovative wearable devices and systems for the healthcare sector, in particular motor neurorehabilitation and Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI), following a truly multidisciplinary open innovation approach which combines cutting edge machine learning, neuromorphic embedded computing, additive microfabrication technologies, biomedical engineering and in collaborations with top level academic, industrial and clinical partners. First sound result of this approach fusing machine learning, ICT, embedded and wearable technologies in healthcare is the ARC-INTELLICARE HW-SW platform for home-based post-stroke motor neurorehabilitation: developed within the H2020 MAGIC PCP competitive program, in less than two years it went from conception to multi-centric international clinical validation. On the BCI side, Dr. Ascari coordinates R&D projects in strong collaboration with TOYOTA and the Institute of Neuroscience of the Italian National Research Council: his team is developing and applying its technology to scenarios related to automotive, assistive robotics and motor neurorehabilitation. The healthcare unit is also developing, in collaboration with the CNR Institute for Special materials for Electronics and Magnetism, a new generation of wearable active biosensors based on micropatterned organic stretchable electronics. In 2021, CAMLIN created a newco, named HENESIS as his previous startup, in which his team and projects are grouped and where he serves as CTO.
Co-author of 14 patents and about 40 international scientific papers (h-Index=14), Dr. Ascari also served as executive president of the Club of spinoff companies of Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies from 2015 to 2021. From 2009 to 2012 he was member of the National Council of AGESCI Italian Boy Scout Association.
