Biography
My research activities started in 1991, working at the High Energy Physics Group in Universidad Complutense de Madrid (GAE-UCM), also performing several stays at CERN for around 2 years. During my PhD, I studied the anomalous magnetic moment of the Tau lepton, and its use to search for Supersymmetric Higgs bosons in the DELPHI detector at LEP collider.
After finishing my PhD in 1996, I moved to the High Energy Astrophysics field, starting with a 2.5-year Marie-Curie fellow at MPI-für-Physik in Munich. Since my return to the GAE-UCM in 1998, I continued working in the same field, first in HEGRA, and afterwards in the MAGIC and CTA gamma-ray observatories. My scientific interests focus on High Energy emission near Black Holes, such as AGNs or micro-quasars (2 PhD theses supervised) and in Dark Matter searches (1 PhD thesis supervised).
My technical activity in the field has been two-fold: first, applying Machine Learning techniques to the selection of gamma rays detected by MAGIC (1 PhD thesis supervised). Second, since 2009 I am responsible for the GAE-UCM laboratory, leading the instrumental activities developed by the group in these experiments: redesign of the tracking system for the HEGRA telescopes; production of the camera signal processing electronics, time-stamping and Central Pixel subsystems of MAGIC; design and production of the CTA telescope trigger (1 PhD thesis supervised) and time-stamping system, currently coordinating this effort at the Telescope collaboration level. Since 2022, I am leading the group effort, funded by the Spanish PERTE CHIP, to use Artificial Intelligence embedded on FPGAs for low-latency scientific and industrial applications.
In summary, I have co-authored ca. 370 articles, (including 8 of them in the Science and Nature journals), cited more than 11500 times (on average over 1300 cites/year during the last 5 years), with an h-index of 78 (SCOPUS). I also have 5 positively-evaluated 6-year terms. Since 2016, I have been contributing to the leadership of the UCM-GAE participation at the MAGIC and CTA international collaborations.
Regarding my teaching experience, I am currently Full Professor at UCM, with a long track record (around 25 years) in similar positions at UCM and Universidad Nebrija. I have been teaching at both MSc and undergraduate level, on a wide variety of topics including High Energy Astrophysics, Structure of Matter, General Physics, Digital Electronics and Linear Systems.
