Biography
Wenfeng Xia received his bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from the Shanghai JiaoTong University, in Shanghai, China, in 2005. He obtained his master in science degree in medical physics from University of Heidelberg, in Heidelberg, Germany, in 2007. His graduation project was performed in the Mannheim Biomedical Engineering Laboratories, in Mannheim Germany, under the supervision of Prof. Josef Bille, and Prof. Markolf H. Niemz, focusing on the feasibility study of dental caries removal by picosecond and femtosecond laser ablation. After master study, he joined the Institute for Biomedical Optics, in Luebeck , Germany, working as an assistant researcher under the supervision of Prof. Reginald Birngruber and Dr. Ralf Brinkmann. He was in a research project on monitoring and automate control of the therapeutic temperature during retinal photocoagulation utilizing a photoacoustic temperature probe, where he focused on photoacoustic signal detection.
From May 2009 to May 2013, he worked as a Ph.D student in the Biomedical Photonics Imaging group, University of Twente, Enschede, the Netherlands, under the supervision of Prof. Srirang Manohar, Prof. Wiendelt Steenbergen, and Prof. Ton G. van Leeuwen. He was embedded in a research project on the development of the second generation Twente photoacoustic mammoscope based on computed tomography configuration. He focused on the design, realization and evaluation of a highly sensitive broadband detection system specialized for photoacoustic breast tomography.
From May 2014 to October 2018, he has been a Postdoctoral Research Associate and later Senior Research Associate, working with Dr. Adrien Desjardins and Prof. Paul Bear`d in the Photoacoustic Imaging group, Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering, University College London. His research focus has been on developing novel imaging modalities and tracking devices for minimally invasive procedures.
He is currently an Associate Professor (UK Senior Lecturer) in the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences, King's College London. He leads the Photons+ Ultrasound Research Laboratory (https://www.purlkcl.org/) at King's College London, which brings talented researchers who are committed to transform the ways that surgical and interventional procedures are performed via ground-breaking technological innovations. They are fascinated by how light and sound interact with biological tissue, and how they can be used for patient benefit. In particular, the research at PURL is centered on the technological advancements and clinical translation of photoacoustics (also called optoacoustics), an emerging imaging and sensing technique that is based on light generated ultrasound.
