Biography

Since graduating with a BSc (Hons) Physio. in 1994 I have worked clinically as a physiotherapist in a number of hospitals in the United Kingdom and Ireland and have specialised in the field of 'musculoskeletal physiotherapy' (incorporating orthopaedics and rheumatology) and chronic pain.

I have been the primary investigator on a number of research projects that investigated physiotherapists clinical reasoning of pain, and mechanisms-based classifications of low back pain.

I have co-supervised the research of three PhD candidates and a number of undergraduate and masters-level physiotherapy students and collaborated on a number of other national and international research projects. These studies have variously investigated the nature and prognostic impact of pain sensitisation in knee osteoarthritis; the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy combined with exercise in the treatment of chronic pain; sensory profiles in chronic low back pain and advanced physiotherapy practice.

I am currently supervising two PhD candidates investigating pain in people living with obesity and pain prevalence and pain education in children.

I also have an interest in evidence synthesis and have authored/co-authored a number of systematic reviews including Cochrane systematic reviews and qualitative evidence syntheses.

I have ongoing research interests related to pain, undergraduate pain education and advanced practice physiotherapy.

I also maintain a small clinical caseload as a clinical specialist physiotherapist at St Vincent's University Hospital within the field of musculoskeletal physiotherapy and orthopaedic triage.
