Biography
Changhong LINGHU is currently a Staff Research Associate working under the guidance of Prof. K Jimmy Hsia and Prof. Huajian Gao in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is expected to receive his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore in August 2023 and has been offered a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position starting in September 2023 at NTU. He received his M.S. and B.E. in Solid Mechanics and Engineering Mechanics from Zhejiang University in 2020 and 2017, respectively.
He works in the interdisciplinary frontiers of mechanics, materials, and engineering. He is a pioneering researcher dedicated to exploring the Mechanics and Applications of Adaptable Interfacial Adhesion for Industry 5.0 across multiple domains. He has achieved several breakthroughs, including high-efficiency (10,000x efficiency increase) mass transfer techniques for flexible electronics and MicroLED displays, a sustainable hydrogel separation interface enabling rapid 3D printing (400 mm/h printing speed for bulk parts up to 50 mm radii), and shape memory polymers-based smart adhesives (stronger adhesion & easier detachment on rougher surfaces) for high-payload scenarios. His research contributes to paving the way for Industry 5.0 in Internet of Things (IoT), Additive Manufacturing, and Collaborative Robots. Additionally, he is actively investigating other areas such as climbing robots and perching aerial vehicles, flexible and wearable electronics, and mechanical metamaterials.
He has led and collaborated with multiple research teams of undergraduate and postgraduate students to conduct research in smart adhesives. His work has resulted in publications of 20 peer-reviewed papers (with 715 citations, H-index =14), including two ESI highly cited papers (Top 1‰) in journals such as Nature Communications, Science Advances, PNAS, npj Flexible Electronics, Soft Matter, Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, Extreme Mechanics Letters, International Journal of Solids and Structures, and one chapter in an Elsevier book. He has also served as a reviewer for SCI journals including Extreme Mechanics Letters and Chemical Engineering Journal. He has granted 18 patents with over ten of them being successfully commercialized.
Moreover, he has impact by implementing his research findings. His accomplishments has been recognized by approximately 50 innovation and entrepreneurship awards, including the First Prize in the NTU Kumar Sustainability & Innovation Prize (2023), the First Prize in the 4th ‘Gold Panda’ Global Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition (2022), the Best Winner Prize in the ‘Chunhui Cup’ Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition (2021), the Gold Medal in the 7th China International ‘Internet+’ Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition (2021), the Gold medal in the 12th ‘Challenge Cup’ Chinese University Entrepreneurship Competition (2020). One of his achievements is the successful translation of his research on Mass Transfer of MicroLED into industrial application. The resulting start-up company, SHAOXING YUANJU TECHNOLOGY CO LTD, has received an investment of 10 million CNY. The technology can enhance the efficiency of MicroLED chip assembly by 10,000 folds and is expected to revolutionize the MicroLED display industry. Currently, he is also serving as the Chief Technology Consultant in this company.
To date, he has mentored 36 undergraduates, with 30 of them pursuing postgraduate studies at prestigious universities such as Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Zhejiang University, Nanyang Technological University, and the National University of Singapore.
