Biography

I am a Reader in Physics and Astronomy at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics, University of Manchester. My research interests include the use of gravitational lensing for the detection of cool exoplanets, and as a probe of Galactic structure. I lead the ESA Euclid Exoplanet Science Working Group that is designing an exoplanet microlensing survey as an additional science activity for the Euclid mission. I am the ESA-appointed scientist to the Roman Galactic Exoplanet Survey (RGES) Project Infrastructure Team for the NASA Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, a $4.3 billion flagship astrophysics mission that is scheduled for launch in late 2026. RGES is expected to find around 1,400 cool (wide orbiting) exoplanets using microlensing and a further 60,000-200,000 hot (close orbiting) exoplanets using the transit method. RGES is the principal science driver for the Galactic Bulge Time Domain Survey, a key Roman survey that will occupy around 25% of Roman observing time. I am Principal Investigator for SPEARNET - the Spectroscopy and Photometry of Exoplanet Atmospheres Research Network. SPEARNET is using a global telescope network to undertake transmission spectroscopy studies of the atmospheres of hot Jupiter and Neptune exoplanets. I have also developed game-theory based smart strategies for targeted SETI - the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.
