Biography

Dr Masha Babak (in publications - Maria V. Babak) has obtained her BSc/MSc with honours at the Higher Chemical College of Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, Russian Federation in 2010. During her undergraduate studies (2005-2010), she was working at the Laboratory of Transition Metal Pi-complexes under the supervision of Prof. Dmitry S. Perekalin investigating photochemical arene exchange reactions in organometallic complexes. From 2007 to 2009 she was also working as a visiting researcher at the laboratory "Miniaturization for Synthesis, Analytics and Proteomics (MSAP)" in Lille, France, under the supervision of Prof. Christian Rolando, where she was developing novel ruthenium fluorescent dyes for in gel protein staining.

In 2010 she has joined the laboratory of Prof. Bernhard K. Keppler at the University of Vienna to pursue her Ph.D. in chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Christian G. Hartinger, looking into the functionalization of metal-based drugs in the quest for new chemotherapeutics and studies of their mode of action. Subsequently, in 2014 she joined the laboratory of Prof. Wee Han Ang at the National University of Singapore to investigate the mechanism of action of metal-based drugs at the cellular level.

Building on her deep interest in cancer and drug development, Dr Masha has completed the postgraduate High-Impact Cancer Research program at Harvard Medical School and started her independent career at City University of Hong Kong in 2020. Her laboratory is working on the drug discovery and translational development of metal-based drugs for aggressive and resistant cancers.
