Biography

I study how animals gather and use information to make decisions, in contexts from competition to mate choice. I take integrative approaches, combining topics from behavioral ecology, to biomechanics and physiology, to big data analyses. My research has shifted our understanding of topics including the "rules" animals follow when fighting, how energy flow functions in signaling, how animals view color signals, and how groups make collective decisions.
