Biography

Ahmed is a researcher in the field of musculoskeletal diseases, ageing and stem cells. Initially he completed a Master of Science in Medicine (Infectious Diseases and Immunology) University of Sydney 2011, followed by Master of Philosophy in Medicine (MPhil) at The University of Sydney in 2013. With an interest in understanding the role of MSCs in the biology of ageing and disease, in particular muscle and bone, Ahmed commenced his PhD in 2014. His PhD was completed in 2017 at the Australian Institute for Musculoskeletal Science (AIMSS) in Melbourne VIC, Australia, focusing on the role of Circulating Osteoprogenitors (COP) cells and Lamin A in musculoskeletal biology and function.
Given the novelty of his PhD, Ahmed was awarded several prestigious prizes in 2017 including the AgNovos Young Investigator Award at WCO-IOF-ESCEO Congress and a grant from the Endocrine Fellows Forum on Metabolic Bone Diseases, ASBMR. Additionally, he was invited to perform several oral activities and poster presentations at numerous conferences such as ASBMR, EFF and IOF.
Ahmed is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at AIMSS investigating the role of senescence in changing the differentiational fate of MSCs from an osteogenic to adipogenic profile. In particular, Ahmed is examining the mechanisms as to how this increases the risk of bone fragility through bone lipotoxicity. In his current role, Ahmed is involved in supervising and assisting many projects which could lead to a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of human Musculoskeletal diseases, including osteoporosis and osteosarcopenia.
