Doctor Salvatore Battaglia was born in Palermo (Italy) in 1974. He graduated MD cum laude in 1998 at Palermo University, School of Medicine. He performed his residency programme in Respiratory Medicine at the same University (1999-2002). He spent a training period of 15 months (2001-2002) at the Department of Pulmonology, Leiden University Medical Centre, Leiden, The Netherlands. In the 2006 he graduated PhD in “Fisiopatologia Respiratoria Sperimentale” (experimental respiratory pathophysiology) at Parma University.
His present position is “Ricercatore Universitario” (Assistant Professor) of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Palermo; Italy.
• RESEARCH ACTIVITY: is focused on asthma and COPD in the fields of small airways, systemic aspects of COPD, oxidative stress, non-invasive techniques, health related quality of life and chronic obstruction in elderly patients. Recently he started some projects on bronchiectasis. The results of these studies have been published on international peer-review journals. From 2003 to March 2016, he published 43 full-text articles (11 as first author and 1 as last author) on international journals, which are present on PUBMED. His h-index is 16 as calculated by Scopus (updated: August 2016).
• CLINICAL ACTIVITY: He carries out his activity of physician (respiratory medicine) in the Unit of Pulmonology of the University of Palermo (c/o “V. Cervello” hospital).
• TEACHING ACTIVITY: He teaches Respiratory Medicine at the Schools of Medicine and at the Schools of Physiotherapists of the University of Palermo (Italy).
