Biography
Lisa Giovannelli was born in Florence, Italy, on May 27, 1961, and was educated at the University of Florence, Italy, where she studied Biological Sciences. She joined the Pharmacology Department as undergraduate student in 1982 and received her degree in 1983. After her graduation, she worked as a Research fellow in the Dept. of Pharmacology of the University of Firenze until 1985, when she entered the PhD program in Pharmacology and Toxicology. From 1988 to 1990 she was a Research Fellow in the Department of Neuropharmacology of the Scripps Research Institute, San Diego, CA, USA. After receiving her Italian PhD in 1990, she spent one more year at Scripps as a post-doctoral fellow, before returning to Italy in 1991. She worked in the Dept. of Pharmacology of the University of Firenze as a post-doctoral fellow from 1992 to 1994. In 1996 she was appointed Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at the School of Pharmacy of the University of Firenze. She specialized in Clinical Biochemistry in 1998. Since Dec 2014 she is Associate Professor in the Department of Neuroscience, Psychology, Drug Research and Child Health (NEUROFARBA) of the University of Florence (Italy).
Dr. Giovannelli is author of 95 research papers in international peer-reviewed journals and 10 book chapters. Her research activity is also documented by participations to more than 50 international and national conferences. Her main research interests are: studies on DNA damage as a biomarker of the effects of environmental pollutants; degenerative pathologies and aging in experimental models and in humans; studies on the protective effects of natural antioxidant compounds towards age-related dysfunctions and age-related markers in humans, in laboratory animals and in cell cultures.
