Biography

João M. M. Rodrigues has been working in the field of Biomaterials Science and Tissue Engineering since joining the COMPASS Research Group at CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials, University of Aveiro, in 2017.

He got his first university degree in Industrial Chemistry at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra (FCTUC), in 2007. In 2009 he starts his Master degree in Organic Chemistry at Aveiro University (UA) who concluded in 2010. He received his Ph.D. (SFRH/BD/81014/2011) in Chemistry in 2015, also from University of Aveiro, working on synthesis, characterization and anion binding studies of new anion binding sensors, under the supervision of Doctor João Tomé and Professor José Cavaleiro. He also had the opportunity to expand his knowledge by become a visiting PhD student (3 months) at Kyoto University, Japan, under the supervision of Professor Takashi Morii.
In 2016, João was a Postdoctoral Research Assistant at the University of Hull in the Prof. Boyle’s Group. His research activities were focused in the development of porphyrin-monoclonal antibody conjugates for photodynamic therapy of head and neck cancer.

Currently, he is a Junior Researcher and Principal Investigator of a R&D project (PTDC/QUI-QOR/30771/2017) at CICECO, and his present activity concerns the modification and functionalization of natural-origin polymers to be used in supramolecular functional biomaterials.

The domain of specialization is organic chemistry, supramolecular chemistry and material chemistry.
