Biography

The primary research goal of my laboratory is to understand interactions between pathogens and the host that manifest into chronic disease in humans and animals. While focusing on the pathogenesis of chronic intracellular pathogens, our lab has illuminated several factors involving the role of innate immune defenses that fail to act on the bacteria and provide lasting immune protection. We are investigating Brucella, Burkholderia, and Mycobacterium pathogenesis and developing nano therapeutics against these infections. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are utilizing our biosafety knowledge and employing our toolbox of cellular microbiology to develop improved therapies based on nanoparticle delivery systems.
