Biography

Dr Ewan Cruickshank is a Lecturer in the School of Pharmacy, Applied Sciences and Public Health. Prior to joining RGU in 2023, he was a research fellow at the University of Aberdeen where he worked on the EPSRC funded New Horizons project: Ferroelectricity and the Nematic Liquid Crystal Phase. He also studied both his PhD and undergraduate degree at the University of Aberdeen. In 2016 he completed his undergraduate studies having achieved 1st class honours in the MChem course. Following this, his PhD thesis titled: Synthesis and Characterisation of Novel Thioether-Based Liquid Crystals and the Twist-Bend Nematic Phase was sustained in 2021 and this generated his interest in the field of liquid crystals. His first-author paper entitled: “Sulfur-linked cyanobiphenyl-based liquid crystal dimers and the twist-bend nematic phase” was awarded the Luckhurst-Samulski Prize in 2019 for the best paper that year in the journal Liquid Crystals, in 2022 he was invited to present his work at the Rank Prize Symposium for Liquid Crystal Technology for Light and in 2024 he was awarded the BLCS Young Scientist Prize.
