Biography

Patrícia Fortes is an Assistant Researcher at the Center for Environmental and Sustainability Research (CENSE) of NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT-NOVA), Lisbon, and a member of CHANGE (Global Change and Sustainability Institute). Her research explores the transition to low-carbon energy systems, circular economy for climate mitigation and the vulnerability of the energy system to climate change. With over 15 years of experience in energy system and general (economic) equilibrium modeling, she has participated in 7 EU-funded research projects, serving as the Principal Investigator for the FCT-NOVA team in 4 of them.
Previously, Patrícia worked at the Joint Research Center of Seville of the European Commission (2015) in the development of a new European energy model. Patrícia has an h-index of 13 (Scopus) and more than 35 peer-reviewed indexed publications in SCOPUS. Since 2020, she has also been an invited professor at FCT-NOVA, lecturing on various modules related to energy and climate mitigation, climate adaptation, materials, and industrial processes. She has supervised and co-supervised 5
PhD students and other young researchers. Since 2021, she has been the coordinator of the Energy and Climate group of CENSE, and since Oct 2023, she has been an elected representative of the researchers on the Environmental Science and Engineering Department Council at FCT-NOVA. Extending beyond a strictly academic audience, Patrícia has extensive experience in energy-climate policy advising. She has coordinated the Energy and Industry decarbonization scenarios of the Portuguese Carbon Neutrality Roadmap 2050 and is currently supporting the development of the National Energy-Climate Action Plan 2030. As a recognized expert in her field, she was an invited keynote speaker at several events, including the EU side event at COP26
in Glasgow, where she addressed circular economy strategies for climate mitigation. Patrícia holds a PhD in Environment from NOVA University (2014).
