Biography
I am Head of Pedagogy and Practice at Buckinghamshire New University (BNU), where I am responsible for leading and championing pedagogical innovation and best practice across the institution. Previously I was a a Reader in Biological Sciences Education at the University of Hull, and Senior Fellow of the University of Hull Teaching Excellence Academy, where my role focussed on Inclusive Education and Awarding Gaps across the institution. I was the Royal Society of Biology's HE Bioscience Teacher of the Year 2016, and the SEB President's Medallist in 2017. I am a National Teaching Fellow and Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. My PhD research at the University of Cambridge with Prof. Alex Webb investigated the role of Calcium oscillations in the plant circadian clock. My postdoctoral research was in stomatal guard cell signalling in Prof. Julian Schroeder at the University of California San Diego. After this I decided to share my passion for plant biology through developing a teaching-focussed career. After 2 years of freelance teaching at the University of Cambridge I was made a Teaching-By Fellow at Churchill College, and in 2013 was appointed as a Teaching Associate in the Department of Plant Sciences. I moved to BNU in 2024.
