Biography

Anita Foerster specializes in environmental and climate change law, regulation and governance and socio-legal, interdisciplinary and empirical research. Prior to her academic career, Anita worked in environmental advocacy for Australian environmental NGOs. As an academic, she teaches and researches across a range of areas of current public policy interest, including climate change, disaster risk reduction, and sustainability regulation.

Anita completed her PhD in 2010 at Melbourne Law School. Her thesis explored the developing law, policy and practice of environmental water allocation in Australia, and she maintains an active research and teaching interest in Australian water law and policy. From 2011-2015, Anita worked as a research fellow with the University of Tasmania. Her research explored the role of law in climate change adaptation planning, focusing on coastal hazards and bushfire; and also legal frameworks for biodiversity conservation and offsets. From 2016 to 2018, she worked as a Senior Research Associate at Melbourne Law School researching how corporate and securities law mechanisms can be used to encourage and require the private sector to reduce carbon emissions and adopt clean energy practices, and exploring and evaluating the impact of strategic climate change litigation. Since 2019, she has been at Monash University, teaching and researching in environmental law and sustainability regulation, with a particular focus on the roles and responsibilities of private actors (e.g. corporates, investors) in society's response to climate change.
