Biography

I graduated in Environmental Sciences from Évora University in 2001 and obtained my MSc degree in Applied Analytical Chemistry from FC-UL in 2004. In 2012, I completed my PhD in Energy and Bioenergy from FCT-UNL.

Since 2016, I am a researcher on CO2 capture (development of enhanced solid sorbents) and valorisation (solar-driven thermochemical energy storage by Ca-looping process and CO2 methanation) at CATHPRO/CQE-IST. I am adjunct coordinator of CATHPRO group at CQE since 12/2023. From 2001 to 2015, I developed activities at LNEG in the areas of fuels & biofuels characterization and thermochemical conversion (TCC). In 2007, I integrated the JRC-IRMM European program for life-long learning for Metrology in Chemistry (TrainMiC®). Overall, my research activities have been mainly focussed on bioenergy and CO2 capture & utilization technologies (12 national and international projects), being supported by an interdisciplinary and growing background in the chemical engineering and environmental sciences.

I am an Invited Assistant Professor at Chemical Eng. Dep. of IST since 2022. Outside the academy, I taught 17 TrainMic courses and several courses as an independent trainer for metrology in chemistry (> 400 h; academia/ industry).

In 2022, I applied (as a team member) to programs for the access of 2 international infrastructures, namely at CNRS-PROMES-France and ENEA-Italy, and both were funded. Since 2022, I applied to Horizon Europe projects as team member (2 not funded/ 1 under evaluation), and a Hop On application (funded). Since 2022, I am an evaluator of international funding applications (CET Partnership).

My participation in international networks include the participation in the (i) WIRE cost action– CA20127 – Waste biorefinery technologies for accelerating sustainable energy processes, in the (ii) ForMEQ: Fórum Internacional para a Metrologia Examinologia em Química, and I was invited to be a member of (iii) Technology Collaboration Programme on Industrial Energy-Related Technologies and Systems (IETS IEA), Task XI- Industry-based biorefineries towards sustainability, Sub-task 7- Circular Bioeconomy and Biomass-Oriented Industrial Symbiosis. In 2023, I integrated in the organizing committee of the International Conference on Carbon Dioxide Utilization (ICCDU) to be held in Portugal in 2025.

Since 2023 I am a Guest Editor of Topic “Carbon Dioxide Capture or Removal and Valorisation: Advances in the Development of Materials and Technologies”, Catalysts, Clean Technologies, Energies, Gases, Sustainability, MDPI journals. I am a reviewer of international journals from ACS: Energy Fuels, Elsevier: J CO2 Util, Waste Management, and MDPI: Sustainability, Minerals, Catalysts, Materials, Int J Mol Sci.

At national level, looking for synergies between CO2 capture and conversion, I have established robust collaborations with researchers from: (1) CATHPRO/CQE, in heterogeneous catalysis for CO2 methanation using activated carbons as support and evaluation of materials with bi-functional properties, i.e., sorbent/catalyst; (2) MET/CQE, in nanomaterials production by supercritical anti-solvent method for CO2 capture and thermochemical storage; (3) Chem4Env/CQE, in TrainMic courses; and (4) Cerena/IST in sorbents deactivation modelling.
Since my PhD, I have developed abilities and skills as supervisor and/or mentor of undergrad, MSc and PhD students, jury in MSc thesis evaluation committees and MSc/post-doc fellowship positions.

My achievements track-record includes 20 peer-reviewed scientific publications (12/20: 1st author, 12/20: corresponding author, 1/20: last author, 12/20: Q1); 2 book chapters, 4 pre-print scientific publications (3/4: 1st author), 47 conferences-oral (23: 1st author). H-index in February 2024: 10
