Biography

David Challis is Professor of Social Care at the University of Nottingham in the Institute of Mental Health. He is also an NIHR Senior Investigator and has undertaken the NIHR Ashridge Senior Leadership Development. Previously he was Professor of Community Care Research and Founder Director of the PSSRU at the University of Manchester, leading a research team of 25 staff. Prior to this he was Professor of Social Work and Community Care at the PSSRU at the University of Kent.

At the University of Manchester, he led the prestigious NIHR School for Social Care from 2009 including the successful application for its renewal for 2019 to 2024. He is the author of 21 books and over 400 journal papers.

His studies of case management and community-based care for older people providing alternatives to hospital and nursing home care influenced policy development both in the UK and internationally. Other studies include: needs assessment processes; care coordination; integration of health and social care; dementia care; and mental health services for older people.

He has been an adviser on services for older people to the Commonwealth Government of Australia, Canadian Province of Ontario, Government of Japan, Government of Hong Kong, the US State Government of Wisconsin, the Government of Ireland, the Department of Health in England and the National Assembly for Wales.

He has been Chief Investigator on two NIHR Programme Grants in Social Care:

EFFECTIVE HOME SUPPORT IN DEMENTIA CARE: COMPONENTS, IMPACT AND COSTS OF TERTIARY PREVENTION. (CHIEF INVESTIGATOR: 2013-2019)
This programme aimed to discern different models of home support, systematise them, survey their current operation in England and evaluate their cost-effectiveness in providing care for people with dementia and their carers.

NATIONAL TRENDS AND LOCAL DELIVERY IN OLD AGE MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES (CHIEF INVESTIGATOR: 2007-2012)
This programme was designed to explore the most appropriate and cost-effective ways of organising and delivering services for older people with mental health problems.

He has been associated with over £36 million in research income and has been an Investigator on studies funded by: DH, EU, NIHR, NIHR SSCR, BUPA, ESRC, Canadian Institute for Health Research and the NHS and Local Government bodies. Some examples include:

• RIGHTTIMEPLACECARE - A EUROPEAN STUDY INVESTIGATING PATTERNS OF TRANSITION FROM HOME CARE TOWARDS INSTITUTIONAL DEMENTIA CARE (EC FP7, 2010 to 2013, £2,320,000).
