Biography

Responsible for delivering PHE’s gonococcal reference service and microbiological lead on the national gonococcal resistance to antimicrobial surveillance programme (GRASP). Also microbiology co-ordinator and PHE project lead for Euro-GASP (European Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Programme) (August 2009 – present) and formally the microbiology co-ordinator of the ESSTI (European Surveillance of Sexually Transmitted Infections) programme (April 2006 – July 2009).

Other Neisseria gonorrhoeae work includes; microbiological lead for a clinical trial investigating the use of gentamicin in the treatment of gonorrhoea, various private evaluations of antimicrobial compounds against N. gonorrhoeae, transformation and conjugation of resistance determinants, establishment of electroporation for N. gonorrhoeae, molecular epidemiological studies, participation in outbreak and whole genome sequencing studies, investigation of the genetic diversity of TEM alleles and collaborator on the eSTI2 project which is developing point-of-care tests for STIs.
