Biography
Professor Shahnaj Husne Jahan is an archaeologist and the founder director of the Center for Archaeological Studies (CAS) as well as involved in teaching at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB). Area of her research and teaching includes South and Southeast Asian archaeology, community archaeology, maritime archaeology, Indian Ocean trade, Buddhist art and archaeology, Islamic art and archaeology, South Asian art and architecture, museology, cultural heritage management, community based tourism, heritage law.
As a professional archaeologist, she has built up a record of enviable experience from participation at numerous excavations in India. Consequently, she has employed this experience in Bangladesh at two sites: Wari-Bateshwar and Bhitargarh. Her work at Bhitargarh, the largest fortified settlement in Bangladesh, appears to be very promising because she has not only unearthed four enclosures and moats of the ancient city, significant religious and public structures dating between the 7th and the 12th century, but also developed various strategies to stimulate public interest in heritage preservation and cultural heritage management of the site.
She is one of the leading scholars in the discipline of archaeology in Bangladesh. This is well borne out by the “Anannya Top Ten 2008 Award” she received, for making significant contributions to the field of archeology in Bangladesh. She has also been honored with the “Asia Fellow Award 2010-2011” by the Asian Scholarship Foundation under the Royal Patronage of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn for undertaking a research on maritime trade between Bengal and Thailand based on archaeological evidences.
She traveled extensively in North America, England, Italy, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, and Bhutan for carrying out archaeological research, visiting significant archaeological sites, studying museum collections, given seminars and workshops.
