Biography
Professor Dr.-Ing. Constantinos Sourkounis (Μ) studied mechanical engineering at Clausthal University, receiving his diploma in 1989. He continued to his Dr.-Ing. degree (1994) and Habilitation (2004) at the same university, but in electrical engineering. Since 2003 he is full Professor, heading Institute for Power Systems Technology and Power Mechatronics at the Ruhr-University Bochum. He combines knowledge of mechanical as well as electrical systems and their optimization and control and is the optimal person to lead control design with system-level approach. His key research areas include design and control of RES-based systems including wind energy converters, mechatronic drive systems, decentralized power systems, design and control of energy storage systems and the wide area of electromobility including charging systems and system-wide optimization of electric vehicles. He has lead numerous research projects in cooperation with national and international industrial partners. Results of his research have been presented and published in international conferences and journals, in more than 350 publications. He has served as an expert in various voluntary positions including:
• 2011-2014: Member of the International Jury for the Research and Technology Programme “Energies 2020" of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency
• 2013-2017: Member of the Board of Trustees of the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology
• since 2017: Head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology branch in Bochum, Germany
• since 2019: Expert Advisor for the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) leading the Working group “Flexibility of the energy system” within the Power Grids Research Network
