Biography
I currently head the Laboratory of Microbial Pathogenesis at the School of Biological Sciences. My research interests are infectious diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria, host-pathogen interaction, generation of vaccines to prevent infectious agents, generation of diagnostic methods to detect respiratory pathogens, microbial genetics and lateral gene transfer in bacteria. My laboratory has been working in the last 10 years at identifying the molecular mechanisms used by Salmonella and Streptococcus pneumoniae to cause systemic diseases in their hosts, as well as the host factors that predispose to severe diseases. Further, my laboratory has been pioneer at describing the role of excision of bacterial genetic elements in pathogenesis and regulation of gene expression in Salmonella.
