Biography
TESSALENO CAMPOS DEVEZAS is Associate Professor at Atlântica, School of Management Sciences, Health, IT & Engineering, where he teaches Glass and Ceramics, Metallic Materials, Advanced Aerospace Materials, Engineering Systems, and Engineering Project since March 2017. He is also Research Member of the Research Unity nº 151 C-MAST (Centre for Mechanical and Aerospace Science and Technologies – Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation - FCT) since 2002. Is retired from the public service, after teaching and researching at University of Beira Interior since May 1992.
He is a member of the International Kondratieff Foundation, honorary member (Moscow), Member of the Advisory Board - Elsevier’s Technological Forecasting and Social Change, Member of the Advisory Board - Journal of Aerospace Technology and Management (IAE, Brazil) , Editorial Manager of the Periodical Fractals (World Scientific Publishing Co.), Member of the Scientific Committee – Simon Kuznets Institute for Self-Organization and Development (Kiev, Ukraine), Full member of the International Research Academy, Moscow, and Co-editor of the Springer Series “Studies on Entrepreneurship, Structural Change and Industrial Dynamics”.
His main research interests embrace Materials Engineering, Technological Forecasting, Futures Studies, Socioeconomic Long Waves, Evolutionary Economics, Technological Evolution, Innovation Theory and Dynamics, Complex Adaptive Systems and New Materials.
Prof. Devezas earned a BSc in Physics in 1970 with the University of the Estado do Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), a MSc in Materials Science in 1974 with the Instituto Militar de Engenharia (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), and a PhD in Materials Engineering in 1981 with the Friedrich Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Germany).
Between February-August 2002 enjoyed a sabbatical license working with the Complex Systems Modeling Group, Computer and Computational Science Division, at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (project on Agent-based Modeling of Complex Socioeconomic Systems), in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Between March-August 2005 enjoyed a second sabbatical license working with the TNT project (Transition to New Technologies) at the International Institute of Applied System Analysis (IIASA), in Laxenburg, Austria. During his third sabbatical license, from September 2010 until February 2011, he worked at the Massachussets Institute of Technology (MIT), Materials Systems Division, Cambridge, MA, USA, working in a project on The Limits of Technology. Between 2011 and 2016 he served as consultant to Brazilian Space Program at the IAE-DCTA (Brazilian Institute of Space Activities), in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil.
In 2002 he was honored with the “Elsevier Best Paper Prize” for his paper proposing a model explaining the mechanism underlying the long economic waves (Kondratieff waves) and in 2006 another of his papers (about the growth dynamics of the Internet) received an Honor Mention from Elsevier. In 2004 he was awarded with the Silver Kondratieff Medal by the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences for his written contributions for the understanding of the Kondratieff waves. He is the author/co-author of more than 60 scientific papers published in several international scientific periodicals and 10 books.
