PROFILE OF PROFESSOR KATO J NJUNWA, MSc PhD
Professor Kato J. Njunwa has been engaged in research and academic work since 1982 during which he was involved in various research undertakings mostly to do with vector borne diseases, hygiene and sanitation. He researched on the transmission dynamics of plague in which the various fleas rodent species were studied and related to immunological and antigen profiles related to the bacterial agent of plague with suggestions for control measures. He then moved on onto research with malaria vectors, insecticide treated bednets during their early studies and later on to intervention studies against malaria using insecticide treated bednets, and their distribution mechanisms. He has also been involved in mosquito larval population dynamics studies in relation to malaria control. Due to the broad nature of malaria control Professor Njunwa has also participated in various studies related to health planning related to malaria control and the roles of district health teams in this important endeavour. Likewise, he has undertaken various surveys on hygiene and sanitation in the community. Apart from research, Prof Njunwa has been involved in WHO training for malaria control since 1986, and also in vector control training activities. He is involved in offering modules on Parasitology, Entomology, and Research Methodology. He has supervised several undergraduate, masters and PhD research work. He has coordinated a masters programme in Health Informatics 2012 to 2015.
Professor Njunwa was the Chairperson of the East African Society of Parasitologists (Tanzania Branch, 1995 to 2002), Secretary General of the Rwanda Environmental Health Association from 2004 to 2015.
