Biography
Leopoldo Estol (for many, simply Dr. "Polo") has developed an intense professional career in his more than 50 years of graduating as a Veterinary Doctor at the University of Buenos Aires, where he also completed his postgraduate degree in Public Health (specializing in Hospital Administration) at the Faculty of Medicine.
Some milestones to highlight are being the first professional in the country to obtain the Animal Welfare Specialist Certificate (and its re-certification) by the Professional Council of Veterinarians; creating and leading the first Chapter on Animal Welfare in a National Veterinary Service (SENASA of Argentina, a fact recognized and highlighted at the time by DEFRA of the UK); designing, selecting the faculty and conducting a Veterinary Career at a non-state-run University (USAL, Argentina) whose curriculum included Animal Welfare as a compulsory subject, which he taught, in addition to being an associate professor of Ethics. At that time, it was the first veterinary school IN THE WORLD to establish this compulsory subject, since all the few that dictated it made it optional (which, unfortunately, happens in many today...)
He developed and develops an intense academic activity in Argentine universities of state and private management, as a tenured, invited professor, and lecturer in undergraduate and postgraduate activities.
The same position in various foreign universities in Colombia, Mexico and the European Union.
He was and is a national and international speaker at universities, research institutes and international organizations at conferences, plenary conferences, appointments as the organiser, president, secretary; international evaluator, moderator, member of various scientific committees, chairman and various international official missions since 1984 on animal welfare, public health, one health, one welfare; 166 conferences in 15 countries besides Argentina.

A representative for Latin America, Executive Committee on Animal Welfare and Ethology, World Veterinary Association (WVA); founder and president of the Latin American Association of Animal Welfare; founder and vice president, World Network of Veterinary Specialists in Animal Welfare; advisor to the University of Bristol, UK, of the World Society for the Protection of Animals, (WSPA), London, UK, of the UNESCO Chair of Sustainability, Polytechnic University of Catalonia, SPAIN.
