Biography
Luiza Cortesão is Emeritus Professor at the University of Porto and senior researcher at the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE). Her research interests and expertise lie on in intercultural issues and Freirean studies, academic excellence and citizenship, adult education and action-research. She has developed intensive research and training and has published several books, book chapters and articles in national scientific journals in these themes. She has been involved in national and international research, action-research and training projects, particularly in Portuguese-speaking African countries. She has worked with and in international organizations such as OECD, SIDA (in Sweden), DANIDA (Denmark’s development cooperation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark), and above all, as a consultant, in UNESCO, working in Angola, Mozambique e Cabo Verde. In Portugal, she worked in different projects of Educational Innovation with the Secretary of State for Education, with Gep/Getap, with DGES and with General Directorate of Consular Affairs and Portuguese Communities, from Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At present, mainly, she develops collaborations with universities, associations and unions in Brazil. Professor Luiza chairs the Instituto Paulo Freire de Portugal (Paulo Freire’s Institute of Portugal). In 2002, she was awarded Grand Officer of the Portuguese Order of Public Instruction. The Honour recognizes her outstanding service to education and teaching.
