In 1998, she successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis in the specialty "Genetics" (03.00.15) in the specialized dissertation council of the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution "Medical Genetic Research Centre" of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (Moscow). After defending her Ph.D. thesis, she continued to actively engage in scientific activities, exploring the structure of the gene pool of the peoples of the Western Caucasus. In 2004, by the decision of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation, she was awarded the academic rank of Associate Professor. In 2008, she defended her thesis for the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences in the specialty "Genetics" (03.00.15) in the specialized dissertation council of the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution "Medical Genetic Research Centre" of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences (Moscow).

She successfully solved issues of an administrative and organizational nature necessary to ensure the activities of the institute entrusted to her and the organization of scientific research. She conducted scientific research in the field of variability of the gene pool of the peoples of the North Caucasus, as well as population analysis of genetic markers.
Currently, Elvira Pocheshkhova works as a professor at the Department of Biology with a Course of Medical Genetics at the Kuban State Medical University (Krasnodar).
She was the head of a number of competitive projects of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (RFBR), as well as a participant in grants from the RFBR, the Russian Humanitarian Science Foundation. She acted as a responsible coordinator for the Caucasus region in the framework of the largest international project to study the genetic variability of human populations "Genographic" (2005-2011).
