Biography

Lui is a physical chemist working at the interface between physics, chemistry and engineering at the University of Bristol. Lui's research goal is to uncover materials that will help us decarbonize our society, with a keen interest in technologies to aid the hydrogen economy.

Lui completed his MSci (2012) and PhD (2017) at the School of Chemistry in Bristol searching for new superconductive families in organic, inorganic and hybrid nanomaterials, attaining a wealth of synthesis, crystallization, physical characterization device construction and analysis techniques to his repertoire. During his studies, he completed a year in industry working for the innovation department at Reckitt Benckiser (2010), and also worked as an editor for the online scientific publisher SelectScience in 2018. Lui joined the Ting group in 2019 and is currently a Senior Research Associate investigating functional porous materials, exploiting their properties for applications in hydrogen storage/carbon capture, superconductivity, pesticide and drug delivery.

Lui's research is interested in understanding phenomena and physics that occurs inside nanoscale pore environments, at the interface of materials and inside the crystal structure and has recently shown how nanoscale environments can be used to manipulate the phase diagram of hydrogen, accessing crystalline phases at higher temperatures than possible in bulk - a positive step for hydrogen storage applications.

In 2020, Lui won the Cavendish gold medal for physics for his research at the Houses of Parliament "STEM for Britain" event, communicating the impact of his research to MPs and learned societies.
