Biography
Alfons Fischer is German and received his Dipl.-Ing. degree in mechanical engineering from the Ruhr Universität Bochum, Germany in spring of 1980 (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Erhard Hornbogen). He completed his Dr.-Ing. (Ph.D.) and Priv.-Doz. (Private Lecturer) degrees in materials science and engineering from the same university in summer of 1984 and in fall of 1992, respectively, when he was head of the wear-of-materials group of the institute for materials science, chair for materials engineering (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hans Berns). From 1992 to 1996 he led the centre of analyses and testing of a German company providing services in laser processing technologies, materials testing, and failure analyses. From 1996 to 2019 he was full professor for materials science and engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany. Since 2005 hes is a visiting scientist at Rush University Medical Center, Dpt. of Orthopedics, Chicago IL, USA and since March 1st 2019 at the Max-Planck-Institut fuer Eisenforschung, Duesseldorf, Germany. The current research work focuses on fatigue, wear and corrosion of metals and metal matrix composites. His research areas are in mechanical, production, automotive, tooling and biomedical engineering. He has published more than 250 papers and co-authored 6 books.
