Biography
Dr. Martin Ward Platt is former consultant paediatrician at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne, with principal responsibilities in the neonatal service. He is Honorary Clinical Reader in neonatal and paediatric medicine at Newcastle University, and Clinical Lead for the National Congenital Anomaly and Rare Disease Registration Service for Public Health England. He is Senior Editor for the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood.
Qualifying in 1979 from Bristol University, Martin worked in the Bristol area for two and a half years before moving to the North East and was appointed to his present NHS post in 1990. He retired from the Newcastle Neonatal Service in 2018 but continues in his role with Public Health England.
Research interests have included pain in children; epidemiology of child death; perinatal epidemiology; a number of aspects of neonatal care including metabolism and hypoglycaemia; and maternal-infant interactions and development.
