Biography
Marzia Grassi is a research fellow at the Institute of Social Sciences - University of
Lisbon in Portugal. Economist, Phd in Development Economics, Master in African

Present research interests
Social dynamics in transnational contexts, Gender, ethnicity, social capital, informal
networks and institutions. Multiculturalism in África and migratory contexts.
Transnational lives and families between Africa and Europe, Mobility, borders, gender,
global economy and development.

(Since 2012) Principal Investigator of the Project “Places and belongings: circular
conjugalities between Angola and Portugal” (PTDC/AFR/119149/2010), funded by
FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology. Ongoing.
Since 2010 she coordinates the ESF network Transnational Lives Mobility and Gender,
part of the Observatory of family in Portugal (TL Network) www.tlnetwork.ics.ul.pt

2009-2013 P.I. of the project Transnational child-raising arrangements between Angola
and Portugal. The project is part of the NORFACE funded European comparative
project, TCRAf-Eu: Effects of transnational child-raising arrangements (TCRAs) on the
life-chances of children, migrant parents and caregivers between Africa and Europe,
coordination – Maastricht University.
2008-2012 P.I. of the Project “Migratory Trajectories from Africa, Illegality and
Gender: the case of Portugal and Italy” (PIHM/GC/0046/2008 and ICS-UL/524/2008).
(2006-2008) Principal Researcher of the Project "Social Capital and Young
Descendents of Palop in Portugal" granted by ICS-UL (ICS-UL/429/2006).
(2004 – 2008) Principal Researcher of the Project "Angola in Movement"
(PPCDT/AFR/59446/2004 and ICS-UL/285/2004), funded by the Foundation for
