Biography

Professor Fawang Liu received his MSc from Fuzhou University in 1982 and PhD from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland in 1991, respectively. Since graduation, he has been working in computational and applied mathematics at Fuzhou University, Xiamen University, Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), University College Dublin (Ireland), University of Queensland (Australia) and Queensland University of Technology (Australia ) for over thirty years. Now he is working as a Professor at Queensland University of Technology, Australia (since 1991). Professor Liu has made important contributions to the fields including numerical methods and theoretical analysis of the fractional differential equations, propagation of electrical signals in the white matter of the brain, image enhancement, and a particle’s motion in crowded environments, parameter estimation for fractional dynamical models arising from biological systems, semiconductor device equations, microwave heating problems, gas-solid reactions, singular perturbation problem and saltwater intrusion into aquifer systems. He has received the Excellence in Research Award in Science and Technology from the Natural Science Association of Fujian, China in 1988 and 2005. He has supervised over seventeen PhD students and twelve MSc students on these fields. Professor Liu is a leading researcher in the numerical methods and numerical analysis of fractional differential equations. Professor Liu is a member of the editorial board of some international journals. He is a Lead Guest Editor of the special issue on fractional differential equations (I) in 2010, (II) in 2011, (III) in 2012 and (IV) in 2013 of the International Journal of Differential Equations and a Lead Guest Editor of the special issue on computational methods, numerical modelling & simulation in 2013 of the Applied Mathematical Modelling. He is also a Lead Guest Editor of the special issue on Analysis of Fractional Dynamic Systems in 2014 of the Scientific World Journal and the Lead Guest Editor of the special issue on Computational Fractional Dynamics Systems and Applications in Advances in Mathematical Physics, 2015. He has published over 340 papers in these fields. Professor Fawang Liu has received the prestigious Mittag-Leffler Award for his outstanding contributions to the field of Fractional Derivatives and their Applications. The award was presented at the 5th Symposium on Fractional Differentiation and Its Application (FDA) held in May 2012 in Hohai University, Nanjing, China. The Symposium is the largest of its kind and brings together delegates from a wide variety of disciplines, such as mechanics, physics, mathematics, control engineering, material sciences, biology, geological engineering, and signal processing. He has also received the Vice Chancellor Performance Awards at Queensland University of Technology in 2014. He has been invited to visit and give series of lectures on fractional calculus over thirty universities in China in the last five years. He has established strong Academic Teams in the field at QUT Australia and China. He has been invited as an excellent oversea teacher at University of Science and Technology Beijing and Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Chinese Ministry of Education for 2-3 months every year (from 2016 to 2022). Most recently he was named in the 2015, 2016, 2017,2018,2019,2020 and 2021 Thomson Reuters list of Highly Cited Researchers.
