Biography
Geert A. Martens studied medicine at Ghent University (1994-2001) and obtained a PhD in biomedical sciences at Brussels Free University (2008). From 2001 to 2008 he conducted fundamental research on pancreatic beta cell physiology, survival, function and replication with focus on biochemical mechanisms of glucose sensing and nutrient-regulation of gene expression and proteomic phenotype. From 2008 to 2016 he developed a research program at the Center for Beta Cell Therapy in Diabetes (VUB) focusing on the discovery of new biomarkers for beta cell injury using integrated omics-technologies, and their translation into clinically grade blood tests (nucleic acid- and immunoassays). Since 2016, he works at AZ Delta General Hospital (Roeselare, Belgium) and coordinates a clinical molecular diagnostics IVDR lab with focus on next-generation sequencing in oncology, NIPT and microbial sequencing. Since 2020 he is appointed as visiting scholar at Ghent University. Present research interests are focused on liquid biopsies in cancer as a tool for detection of early recurrence and universal primary screening.
