Biography

Amalia Enríquez-de-Salamanca (1969) graduated in Biochemistry in 1992, and obtained her Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1998 at the Complutense University (UCM; Madrid, Spain). In 2000 she became Associate Researcher in the Ocular Surface Group at IOBA, where she currently is Principal Investigator. She is also the Scientific Director of the Ocular-facial pain Unit (UniDOF) at the IOBA since 2017. Additionally, she is member of the Biomedical Research Networking Center in Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine (CIBER-BBN) since 2006.

Her main research field is ocular surface inflammation, where she investigates about characterization of potential biomarkers (disease, activity, therapeutic…), in tears and/or epithelial cells in immune-based chronic inflammatory diseases of the ocular surface, such as Dry Eye syndrome, chronic allergy (atopic keratoconjunctivits and vernal keratoconjunctivits) and ocular chronic pain. Her research also includes the study of the role of corneal and conjunctival epithelial cells for these diseases. She has authored 65 publications in peer reviewed indexed journals. She has been Principal investigator of 7 regional and 4 national competitive projects, and participates in the European Marie Curie project IT-DED3. She has also collaborated in 54 R&D projects.
Besides her research work, she also participates in postgraduate teaching. She has directed seven doctoral theses and she currently co-directs four more in progress.
