Biography

I received my Telecommunication Engineer degree in 2002 and my PhD degree in 2008, both from Universidad de Valladolid (UVa), Spain. Since 2002 I have been a Lecturer and Researcher at that university, and I am currently Associate Professor.

RESEARCH

My research work does not only focus on basic research to generate knowledge but also on the transfer of that knowledge to the society. I belong to the Optical Communications Group from the Universidad de Valladolid (considered as consolidated research unit by the regional government and recognized research group by the Universidad de Valladolid). I started working in two lines: design of optical devices and optical networks. From 2004, I focussed my research on communication networks, in particular in the following topics: design and optimization of wavelength routed optical networks, hybrid optical networks (proposing polymorphic networks), cognitive heterogeneous optical network (proposing CHRON networks) and access optical networks. I have also actively researched in the use of ICT technologies in education. Moreover, I have actively collaborated with the other line of our research group devoted to research about wireless communications and location techniques using some methodologies previously used in my research in network optimization.

The dissemination activity of my research have produced 37 papers in JCR journals, 5 papers in non-indexed magazines, 9 book chapters, 14 invited papers in international conferences and 87 regular papers in international and national conferences. The funding for that research has come from 31 projects (more than 2.5 M€) from public calls 4 European, 14 nationals and 13 regional). I have led 2 European projects (being the coordinator of IoTalentum: 14 partners and almost 4 M€) and 3 national projects (being the coordinator of ONOFRE-2 with 3 partners). Furthermore, I am also the coordinator of the national research Go2Edge network (15 entities). Moreover, I have worked in 74 contracts (or grants) with public institutions or companies being the principal researcher in 12 of them. Those contracts have provided more than 5 M€ and, in particular, the contracts that I have led have provided our group with almost 890 k€.

TEACHING

I have taught during 18 consecutive years in the Universidad de Valladolid. I have taught 10 bachelor-level subjects, 4 master-level subjects and 1 PhD-level subject. That activity has been assessed in the framework of the DOCENTIA programme and being declared as Excellent with scores of 92.08 and 96.05 out of 100 (05/07-08/09 and 2010/11-2013/14). I have supervised 3 PhD theses (one of them awarded with the Extraordinary PhD thesis award and the other in a non-Spanish institution) and 44 final projects/master thesis/bachelor thesis. I have been the head of the Erasmus international office in the Telecommunication Engineering Faculty.

MANAGEMENT

I have performed different university management positions, almost without any interruption, from 2004 up to now. During that period, I have been Secretary of the Signal Theory, Communications and Telematic Engineering Department, Secretary of the Telecommunication Engineering Faculty and I am currently the Deputy Director of that Faculty.
