Biography
Nariyoshi Shinomiya is the President of the National Defense Medical College (NDMC) (January 2021 to date). He was born in 1958 in Kochi prefecture, Japan. He graduated from the NDMC and got his M.D. license in 1983, then worked for the Maritime Self Defense Force as a medical officer for ten years (LTCDR in 1993). During that time, he finished the Graduate Course of Medicine at the NDMC in 1991 and got his Ph.D. in 1992. He worked as the Associate Professor of the Department of Biology, NDMC (1993 to 1997), then the Associate Professor of the Department of Microbiology, NDMC (1997 to 2007). He finished the Diploma Tropical Medicine & Hygiene Course at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine in 2000. Also, he worked for the Van Andel Research Institute from 2002 to 2004 as a visiting scientist. Then he worked as the Professor of the Department of Integrative Physiology and Bio-Nano Medicine at the NDMC, Japan (2007 to January 2021), also the Director of NDMC Research Institute (2016 to January 2021). His specialty includes microbiology & immunology, molecular oncology, diving medicine, and bioethics. He was a member of the Committee for Safe and Secure Science & Technology, Ministry of Education Culture Sports Science and Technology, Japan from 2009 to 2012. He was assigned to Special Allied Member of the Science Council of Japan in 2012 and played a leading role in the Committee for Dual Use Issues in Science and Technology. He also worked for the Center for Research Development Strategy, Japan Science and Technology Agency as a special fellow from 2012 to 2013. He is currently the President of the Japan Human Cell Society (2015 to date) and also the Vice President of the Japanese Association for Clinical Hyperbaric Oxygen and Diving Medicine (2013 to date). His interest in the infectious diseases field is tropical diseases and anti-bioterrorism. His recent work on bioethics has focused on the dual-use issues and education for life scientists.
