Biography

I am Associate Professor with Habilitation and head of the laboratory of Bioenergetics at Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL). I aim at exploring the molecular mechanisms of energy transduction of biological systems, fundamental processes for life. I am corresponding author of 49 publications and author of 85 articles. I coordinated the group Chemistry for Biological Systems (6 labs) from the research Unit BioISI. I was Principal Investigator and head of laboratory at ITQB-NOVA. I had 13 research projects funded as principal investigator, received an Instruct R&D award and I was responsible for a Marie Curie Fellow. I have been frequently invited to present my work at international conferences.

I am coordinator of the 1st cycle of studies in Biochemistry. I was vice-president of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at FCUL. I supervised 7 post-Docs, 11 PhD and 8 MSc students as well as over 40 undergraduate and Erasmus students. My group is now composed of two Junior Researchers and two PhD students. I have almost 25 years of teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. I included the Executive Committee of ITQB PhD program on Molecular Biosciences (2013-2018) and coordinated its profile on Molecular Mechanisms of Biological Processes. I was involved in establishing the Master on Biochemistry for Health, ITQB-UNL. I was an elected member of ITQB Pedagogical Council.

I integrated the Scientific Advisory Board of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysics and included the Executive Committee of the European Biophysics Societies’ Association (2011-15). As President of the Portuguese Biophysical Society (2008-15) I took several initiatives to promote biophysics in Portugal and Portuguese affiliated science abroad. I chaired and organized the European Biophysics Congress, EBSA2013 and the European Bioenergetics Conference, EBEC2014. I included the the organization committee of FEBS2022. I have been evaluator of Institutions in Germany (MPI) and France (Hcéres) and of projects for NSF (USA), ANR (France) and DFG (Germany), among others and reviewer for several journals.
