My research long-term goal is to develop novel bio-imaging based platforms that allow for biologically-modulated adaptive radiation therapy for future personalized radiation therapy applications. This involves the integration of multimodality imaging methodologies, biomarkers identification and characterization, imaging-guided dose-response assessment for tumor and normal tissues, multimodality image registration, adaptive therapy planning, patterns of failure characterization and oncologic outcomes correlation.
On my way to develop this I was awarded two year-funded American cancer society international fellowships for Beginning Investigators in 2012, which allowed me to have joint appointment with MD Anderson and Alexandria University where I have the opportunity to execute my PhD thesis at the University of Alexandria and to be a researcher at the world-wide top-notch MD Anderson Cancer Center under the mentorship of Professor: David Rosenthal and Ass. Professor: Clifton Fuller. On my systematic approach to reach my goals I developed a methodology for image registration quality assurance and had a first author publication in Radiology Journal. Also, I developed a robust methodology for characterization the patterns of failure in the era of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) which was presented at the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) 2014 meeting and currently under review in the Radiotherapy and Oncology Journal. Additionally, I was involved in multiple projects investigative the optimization of adaptive radiation platforms and margins assessment in head and neck cancer.
I am currently a co-investigator in landmark trial assessing the integration of multi-parametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a prospective trial of IMRT versus proton therapy and I am also a co-investigator in a clinical trial investigating the optimization of MRI for image-registration, bulk density assignment, target delineation, and dose calculation for head and neck cancer. In a three-year period, I was able to publish 70 peer-reviewed articles and more than 100 abstracts in top-internationally recognized radiation oncology conferences.
