Biography
Swapna Shanbhag is a consultant ophthalmologist at the Cornea Institute, L.V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. After finishing her ophthalmology residency, she completed a two year fellowship in Cornea and Anterior segment at LVPEI, Hyderabad and then pursued a two year research fellowship in Ocular Surface diseases (ocular chemical burns/SJS) at Massachusetts Eye and Ear affiliated to Harvard University, Boston, USA.
Her main areas of clinical interest include cataract surgeries, corneal transplants (PK/DALK/DSAEK), surgeries involving stem cells of the cornea (SLET), artificial corneal transplantation (keratoprosthesis), and ocular surface reconstruction. Her research focuses on reducing the incidence and morbidity related to corneal blindness secondary to corneal chemical burns and Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS)/toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). She has published her research in international journals and has also presented at national and international meetings and has won awards for her research. She is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). She also serves on the editorial board of the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology.
