Biography
Dr. Philippe Bouchard is Emeritus Professor at the University of Paris Cité, France. Until September 2021, he was full Professor and Chairman of the Department of Periodontology, U.F.R. d’Odontologie, Université de Paris in France, where he received his Dental Degree. He has been, for the last ten years, director of the European Postgraduate Program in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry accredited by the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP). In the meantime, he was head of the Oral Pathology – Oral Surgery and Periodontal Surgery Clinical Unit at the Rothschild Hospital, AP-HP, in Paris, France. He has been clinical Professor at Loma Linda University, and visiting Professor at USC (California, USA). He is currently member of the laboratory URP 2496.
Philippe Bouchard has great interest in research questions dealing with the systemic effects of periodontitis, aesthetics, decision making in periodontology and implant dentistry. The bidirectional relationship between oral health and general heath is the core of his research, with particular attention on the impact of inflammatory processes on comorbidities. Two models are explored: (1) cardiovascular diseases, (2) obesity. Recently, he and his team at the Rothschild Hospital have shown particular interest in the relationship between masticatory capacity and general health by publishing several articles on the subject.
Dr. Philippe Bouchard has published in peer-reviewed journals (h-index: 47), and has research collaborations in Europe with Italy and UK (UCL), in the US with Harvard, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Columbia University. He also has published article with the University of Jordan (Jordan) and the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil). He is the author of a book on implant dentistry (2 ed. 2012 and 2018, Wiley ed.), and of several chapters for textbooks in periodontology including the recent “Periodontitis and Systemic Diseases” (Hirschfeld J. and Chapple I. editors, 2021). He is member of the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Periodontology (Europe), member of the peer review panel of the Journal of Periodontology (U.S.A.), and occasional reviewer for various scientific publications (Journal of Dental Research, Clinical Oral Implant Research, Clinical Oral Investigation, Journal of Dental Education, Plos One, The International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Implants, European Heart Journal, American Heart Journal, Atherosclerosis, etc…).
Dr Bouchard is currently a member of the European Commission Expert panels in the field of medical devices (appointed 2020). He has been elected as President of the Periodontal Research Group (PRG) at the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) in 2023. He started to be a member of the IADR Awards Review Committee in 2023.
His pedagogical and organizational qualities of clinical and theoretical teaching led him to participate in the steering committee of the Rothschild hospital, and to participate in FDI program on Diabetes. Further, he was involved as an expert in Erasmus programs. This includes the teaching of Evidence Based Dentistry in Europe (Undergraduate curriculum and e-course on Evidence-Based Dentistry, 2014-2016), and the implementation of flip classrooms in European Universities (Introduction of the flipped classroom in odontology, 2017-2020).
