Biography
Juan D Cañete holds a degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and a PhD in Medicine from the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Medicine, respectively, at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He obtained his MIR qualification as a rheumatologist in the Arthritis Unit of the Hospital Clinic de Barcelona and worked as a Senior Consultant in the Arthritis Unit from 1996 until the end of 2024. Dedicated to the clinical and translational research of patients with chronic inflammatory arthritis, mainly psoriatic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, he started the Arthroscopy and Synovial Biopsy Unit in 1998, after a stay at the University of Leeds (Dr. Doug Veale and Prof. Paul Emery), developing a multitude of impact studies through national and international collaborations. He has been member of the Task Force of EULAR recommendations for Psoriatic Arthritis since 2009.
Since November 2024 he is Emeritus Consultant at Hospital Clínic and Senior Researcher at IDIBAPS, Barcelona. He is currently leading the Arthritis research group, focusing on biomarker studies and personalised medicine in European IMI consortia (3TR in RA and HIPPOCRATES in PsA), FOREUM (2023-2026), as well as with the Department of Immunology and Rheumatology at the University of Erlangen (Dr. A. Ramming); studies on inflammatory and anti-inflammatory mechanisms of macrophages in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (Dr. A Postigo, IDIBAPS) and the role of epigenomics in chronic defined arthritis and chronic undifferentiated arthritis (Dr. E Ballestar, J Carreras Institute, Barcelona).
