Biography

PD Dr. Maria B. Asparuhova is head of the Laboratory of Oral Cell Biology and lecturer at the School of Dental Medicine, University of Bern, Switzerland since 2016. Dr. Asparuhova has received her Master of Science degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at the University of Sofia, Bulgaria, her PhD degree in Cellular and Biomedical Sciences from the Faculty of Science, University of Bern, Switzerland, and a habilitation in Biomedical Sciences from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Bern, Switzerland. After a postdoctoral training in the Laboratory of Prof. Dr. D. Schümperli (University of Bern) in the field of RNA-based therapeutics for viral and genetic diseases, she spent 8 years working as a Senior Scientist in cancer research at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research, Basel, Switzerland (affiliated with the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research and the University of Basel).
Currently, PD Dr. Asparuhova leads her own research group in the field of regenerative medicine. Her laboratory performs research for two departments, the Department of Oral Surgery and Stomatology, chaired by Prof. Dr. V. Chappuis and the Department of Periodontology, chaired by Prof. Dr. A. Sculean. Dr. Asparuhova's research answers mechanistic questions related to oral hard and soft tissue regeneration including functional characterization of autogenous bone, extraction socket soft tissue, connective tissue grafts, bioactive substances and regenerative materials. The Laboratory of Oral Cell Biology has attracted considerable peer-reviewed funding and has published a number of high-impact publications in the fields of periodontology and implant dentistry.
