Biography
Dr. Bullock is Professor Emeritus at the University of Virginia, School of Nursing. In 1996 she obtained a PhD in Public Health from the University of Otago in New Zealand. She became the Jeanette Lancaster Alumni Professor in Nursing at the University of Virginia, School of Nursing (UVa SON) in August 2010. During her tenure at UVa SON, she served as the Director of the PhD program and also as Associate Dean for Research. Early in her career she was the first to provide empirical evidence of the connection between intimate partner violence during pregnancy and infant low birthweight. Her continued research has secured funding from NIH for five different randomized controlled trials that focused on improving health outcomes for women who experienced abuse during the perinatal period and decreasing the impact of that abuse on the children in the home. Since arriving at UVa SON, she has received both internal and external funding as a PI or Co-PI from NIH and the Virginia Department of Health, as well as several internal grant awards. She has served as Co-I on federally funded grants awarded to the School of Medicine and the Applied Research Institute at UVa. She has been a mentor to junior investigators on a K-award, an EU Marie Currie fellowship and a Tri-service pre-doctoral award. She has over forty publications since arriving at UVa and has served on committees of sixteen PhD students who have graduated from the UVa SON, for nine of whom she was the major advisor. She has been recognized for her research and leadership roles through both internal and external awards during her tenure at UVa, including the Distinguished Professor award from the UVa SON Alumni Association.
