Biography
I am currently a post-doctoral fellow under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 101034349, and from the State Research Agency of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation through the Programme Maria de Maeztu Unit of Excellence (CEX2019-000945-M), doing research on Palaeolithic faunas from Portuguese archaeological sites. I hold a PhD in Palaeolithic Zooarchaeology awarded in 2021 by University College London (UCL, UK).
I worked as a teaching assistant in Zooarchaeology and in Field Methods in Archaeology in University College London Institute of Archaeology, UK. I was the assistant director of UCL field school between 2014 and 2016, in the UK, and since 2018 that I am the founder and director of South-West Archaeology Digs (SWAD) field school, in Portugal, co-leading several excavation projects with hands-on teaching on site and in the field laboratory. Several SWAD field school participants have gained academic credit for their participation, which was awarded by different European, American and Australian universities.
I have been the jury of academic degree to two international PhD thesis in Spain. In 2022, my PhD thesis was awarded the Archaeology Prize Eduardo da Cunha Serrão by the Associação dos Arqueólogos Portugueses, in Portugal.
My research has been part of several funded national and international projects. I am the author of 17 peer-reviewed papers in journals with impact factor (IF), including articles in major scientific journals of general science, like Science and Nature Communications, and others of more specific fields of human evolution, like Quaternary Science Reviews, Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports, Palaeo3, International Journal of Osteoarchaeology. I have authored nine papers on academic journals without IF, and ten papers on conference publications without IF. I have produced several unpublished zooarchaeology and archaeology reports for academic and commercial archaeology projects in Portugal and the UK.
I am an Editorial Board Member of Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology, and a scientific committee member of the Postgraduate Zooarchaeology Forum (PZAF). I am a referee for IF journals, like Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology, International Journal of Osteoarchaeology, and Environmental Archaeology: The Journal of Human Palaeoecology. I am currently co-editing the special issue “Neanderthal Complex Behaviour Through the Lens of Faunal Resources” in Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology.
I have contributed with over 40 talks/posters at international conferences in Portugal, Spain, France, UK, Lithuania, Turkey and Japan. I have organised seminar series and sessions in international conferences in specific fields of human evolution in Portugal, UK and Turkey.
The media and social impact of my research has been presented and discussed on several international platforms, featuring in at least 168 news in TV, radio, newspapers – including The New York Times, CNN, BBC News and The National Geographic – as well as in podcasts, and other digital platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
